Family Constellations: Healing the Root of Relationship Patterns

Updated: 6 days ago

Many people find themselves repeating the same patterns in relationships — despite insight, effort, or even years of personal work. You may notice recurring themes such as feeling unseen, carrying responsibility for others, struggling with intimacy, or experiencing unexplained blocks in connection. Family Constellations offers a way of exploring these patterns at their root.

What Are Family Constellations?

Family Constellations is a therapeutic approach that looks beyond the individual and into the wider family system. Developed by Bert Hellinger, this work is based on the understanding that we are deeply influenced by our family history — often in ways we are not consciously aware of.

Experiences such as loss, trauma, exclusion, or unresolved grief in previous generations can shape present-day emotional and relational patterns. Family Constellations helps bring these hidden dynamics into awareness so they can be acknowledged, integrated, and released.

How Relationship Patterns Are Formed

Within families, there is an unconscious system of belonging, order, and balance. When this system is disrupted — for example through early death, separation, trauma, or secrets — later generations may unknowingly carry emotional burdens that do not belong to them.

This can show up as:

  • Repeating relationship conflicts

  • Difficulty maintaining closeness

  • Feeling “stuck” in certain roles

  • Chronic guilt, anxiety, or over-responsibility

  • Patterns that don’t seem to make logical sense

Family Constellations works with these dynamics at a systemic level, rather than focusing only on personal history.

What Happens in a Family Constellations Session

In a session, the focus is placed on an issue you are experiencing — often related to relationships, family dynamics, or a sense of inner conflict. Through guided exploration, the underlying system is gently revealed.

The work may involve:

  • Exploring family relationships and themes

  • Identifying unconscious loyalties or entanglements

  • Bringing acknowledgement to what has been unseen

  • Allowing space for resolution and re-ordering

The process is respectful, contained, and paced carefully. You do not need detailed knowledge of your family history for the work to be effective.

Healing Through Acknowledgement

One of the core principles of Family Constellations is that healing happens through acknowledgement rather than analysis. When what has been excluded or forgotten is given a place, the system can begin to settle.

Clients often report:

  • A sense of emotional relief

  • Greater clarity in relationships

  • Feeling more grounded in themselves

  • Subtle but lasting shifts in how they relate to others

These changes often unfold naturally over time.

A Gentle and Respectful Approach

Family Constellations is not about blaming families or revisiting trauma in a re-traumatising way. Instead, it offers a compassionate lens through which to view inherited patterns, honouring what has come before while creating space for something new.

Is Family Constellations Right for You?

This approach can be particularly helpful if:

  • You notice repeating relationship patterns

  • Traditional talking therapy hasn’t fully resolved an issue

  • You feel impacted by family dynamics in ways you can’t explain

  • You are open to systemic and experiential approaches

Sessions can take place in person or online, and are adapted to suit your individual needs.
